CEEC, Hikers Alliance Plant 2,500 Trees in Mulanje

The Centre for Environmental Education and Communication (CEEC), working with Hikers Alliance, held a tree planting exercise at Likhubula in Mulanje on 7 February 2026.

The activity brought together community members, volunteers, environmental advocates, and development partners. Together, they planted 2,500 trees to support forest restoration around Mount Mulanje.

Mount Mulanje is one of Malawi’s key biodiversity and water catchment areas. The exercise focused on restoring degraded land and encouraging communities to take part in protecting natural resources.

CEEC Director of Operations, Thandiwe Mtonda, said environmental conservation needs cooperation and practical action.

“Protecting the environment is everyone’s responsibility. The participation we saw during this exercise shows that communities and organisations are willing to work together to restore and protect our forests,” said Mtonda.

Hikers Alliance Team Leader, Austin Mndolo, said the exercise was also meant to encourage people to take environmental issues seriously.

“Tree planting is one step towards protecting Mulanje Mountain and its biodiversity. We want more people, especially young people, to understand the importance of conserving our environment,” said Mndolo.

Participants also received messages on biodiversity conservation, climate change, and sustainable management of natural resources.

CEEC said it will continue supporting similar activities across Malawi to strengthen environmental awareness and community participation in conservation efforts.
